In 1888 D. H. McDonald constructed a fence around what is now the Aids Memorial Grove to hold 6 deer donated by T. Duncan of Doncan's Mill, CA. This area hosted Elk, ostrich, and briefly even seals. At the top of the glen a bear pit was erected to hold Monarch, a huge California grizzly trapped in 1889 in Ojai Valley in Ventura County by Allan Kelly a reporter for the SF Examiner at the direction of William Randolph Hearst. Stones from the Bear Pit are still arranged between the Dell and the Handball Courts.
