THE PARK IS DYING

Though Golden Gate Park is the most visited urban park in the United States and at its highest level of usage ever, staffing is at an all time low. The number of Park gardeners has dwindled from over 400 in 1943, to 120 in 1976, to only 47 park gardeners today. With the current hiring freeze, and the average age of park gardeners well over 50, this number will continue to fall. The park can’t even be adequately watered at this staffing level. Many important trees died this summer and many more are dying.
